Pickleball Paddles guide
We have created this guide to help players of all skill levels pick the best possible paddle based on their style of play, their physical attributes, and their experience level.
WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?
PICKLEBALL is a paddle sport played using a perforated plastic ball over a tennis-type net on a badminton-sized court. The game can be played in a singles or doubles format, inside or outside. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn. Best of all it is great fun!
PICKLEBALL was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington USA. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum – whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities, are credited for creating the game. As to the name, the most commonly accepted version was that the Pritchard’s family dog Pickles would chase after errant balls and then hide them in the bushes, thus Pickle’s ball (later shortened to PICKLEBALL).
In 2018, it was estimated in excess of 3,000,000 players were actively involved in the sport in the USA and Canada. It’s now a popular game growing in Australia.
Weight is the most important factor when choosing a paddle.
Pickleball paddles can range from 6 to 14 ounces. (170 to 397 Grams)
Most composite or graphite paddles weigh from 6 to 9 ounces. (170 to 255 Grams) A heavier paddle will help you to drive the ball, but will provide less control of the ball.
